Alkalinity - Most ionizers can produce 8.5 to 9.5 drinking water. Very few brands can produce strong acidic water. Enagic's LEVELUK series of water ionizers all produce strong acidic water of 2.4 - 2.7 pH. This information is clearly posted on the enagic.co.jp corporate website in the products section.

Enagic produces several options for the Kangen water machine. The prices range from $1280.00 to $3980.00.  Not all machines product the strong 2.4-2.7 acidic water or the high 11.0 alkaline water. The price depends on the amount of plates inside the machine and the variety of water it produces.

Strong Acid Water - The LEVELUK SD501 produces 2.5 pH strong acidic water. It is used in hospitals and restaurants to aid in disease prevention as well as sterilization. There are many uses for this water. In Japan they are using it in many cases to decrease the need for chemicals and pesticides on a golf course as well as in small farms.

The Japanese were so impressed with the Kangen ionized water, they developed a documentary series on the different types of water produced. You can view most of these videos in our video section.

It is vital that the strong acid water produced is reliable. Using this water for sterilization of germs on your counter requires a strong acidic water of a minimum of 2.7 pH. When it comes to open wounds and bed sores or gangrene where cell death occurs and many times amputation is necessary a strong acidic water of 2.6 pH will kill these germs on contact.

ORP = Antioxidents - The ORP relates to the oxidation reduction potential. The higher the negative ORP is, the more antioxidents you will have in your water. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation regarding the ORP production. ORP must be measured in a very specific way. It requires a set of conditions in order to gain an accurate reading. Many misleading results are presented online. Enagic's machines are considered medical instruments and therefore highly reliable in the production of quality Kangen Water® they produce.

Variables Affecting ORP:

Water quality. This includes the negative and positive minerals inside your water. The higher the mineral content, the higher the ORP. Some states have very soft water (low mineral content) other states have very hard water. For instance, in some areas California produces an average of -700 ORP due to the hard water content. In fact 89.3% of US homes have hard water in varying degrees.

Well water. Well water content is affected by well depth, mineral content and geographical location. Deep wells tap into water that is less polluted with chemicals and other ground water pollutants. Some well water pre-filters remove far too many minerals and in some cases all mineral content. Without enough minerals, a very low ORP or no ORP will be produced. The simple solution is to remove the pre-filter.

Pre-filters and the quality of the well water before entering the water ionizers will affect the ORP of any machine. Water flow can affect the ORP when the water pressure is very high. It is also affected by the amount of calsium contained in the water.

The ORP is also effected by the environment. Before testing the ORP these probes should be cleaned using strong acidic water. This is because an insufficiently cleaned electrode or dried electrode may cause the contamination to remain on it. Cleaning should be done before and after each test. ORP readings are greatly effected by this and a lower ORP reading can be produced if these probes are not properly cleaned and prepared for each test.

When you consider all of these variables, it is easy to see how accurate testing of each machine in a wide variety of environments will provide different results. In addition, time will also affect the amount of ORP contained in the water. Over time the ORP will slowly diminish. However, when tested, Enagic's SD501 maintains the ORP levels for a very long time. The ORP will slowly decrease over a period of 3 days.

ORP is also highly affected by power. The more watts a machine has, the more power it produces. Power equals stronger, longer lasting and higher ORP. Enagic's LEVELUK SD501 has 7 large plates with 230 watts of power.

Special Cleaning Cartridge

In addition to a self cleaning feature on all of Enagic's models, each models has a special cleaning cartridge that is used to clean the plates 1 to 2 times per month. The purpose of these cartridges is to clean the plates of mineral build up. Mineral build up cannot be totally prevented through the self cleaning features of any ionizer. Enagic's cleaning cartridges remove mineral build up and keep their ionizer models in top running condition. This is another reason why Enagic's brand will continue to produce excellent water quality as well as a faster flow for years and years to come.

The ORP rating and water flow is greatly affected by mineral build up on the plates. As mineral build up occurs on the plates, both water flow and ORP decrease tremendously.

Mesh VS Solid Plates

Enagic does not use mesh technology for the plates. They use solid platinum coated titanium plates.

The large plates of the LEVELUK SD501 are big enough and strong enough to handle the expanding and contracting of the plates as they heat up and cool down when these machines are used day in and day out in the variety of ways the water is used.

All of Enagic's plates are of the highest quality construction to produce the best alkaline-antioxident water possible.

Power Output: Watts, Transformers and the SMPS

SMPS – SMPS is an acronym for Switch-Mode Power Supply Applications.

Transformer – A part of the machine that is used to boost the power level.

Watts – A watt is a measure of energy conversion.

All of these terms are rather technical and very tedious in trying to really get down to understanding how each of these things works or is used. However, it is good to understand the basic “idea” or “importance” of these things because without understanding their purpose, it would be easy to misunderstand their value to the ionic machines that use them.

Every ionic machine needs power. The way that power is managed has to do with the SMPS as well as the type Transformer they are built with. Enagic uses a Transformer that can handle a large amount of energy produced by more watts. 

What is the difference? And why does it matter?

The difference between these two parts is important because it has to do with power and durability. Each machine takes water in and through another pretty technical process, changes that water from what we know as “tap” into a health promoting ionic water.

These machines heat up while performing this process. The plates inside the machines become very hot during this process. The bottom line here is that the SMPS is used as an off switch. In order to protect the plates from becoming too hot, the SMPS shuts down the machine. Most ionic machines have these SMPS units. The machines that have them, can only run for approximately 5 minutes before the SMPS kicks in and shuts them off until they cool down.

Enagic uses the transformers to accommodate the higher power levels. Due to the patented technology of the machines made by Enagic, the machines can run for 30 minutes without having to cool down.

Beside being able to produce water at a faster rate and being able to run for a longer period of time, there is another reason why the technology to use a Transformer instead of an SMPS is important. As these machines heat up, the quality of the water coming out from them is reduced. The greatest benefit of these machines has to do with the quality of water it produces. The higher the ORP the greater the benefits.

However, producing ORP is only the first step. Longevity is also important. The life of the ORP in the water is also something to consider. I have read many different things regarding the testing of ORP. When it comes to Enagic's machines I can tell you that the ORP produced by these machines is long-lasting. My friend personally tested the ORP over a days time. The ORP rating immediately coming out of the machine was –400 which is excellent. After a day, she tested it again and it was –300.

Other machines have been tested in the same way and the ORP produced from machines using SMPS technology with a lower watt capability produces water with an ORP that is reduced by 50% within the first 2 minutes.

When it comes to Enagic's choice of using the Transformer and not using an SMPS it is simply because the type of technology required to obtain the additional power and lower the heat issues requires it.

When it comes to the power and heat issues, Enagic's machines can handle the heat for up to 30 minutes of continual use.

Water Flow Rate:

The LEVELUK SD501 has no problem with high volume use. The LEVELUK SD501 can handle a high water flow from homes with high water pressure. I have personally filled 5 gallon water container with 4 gallons of water in 2 minutes and 20 seconds allowing the water to flow as fast as our water pressure allowed. 

The average water flow of other ionizer brands appears to be restricted to about 3/4 of a gallon per minute. Due to the smaller plates and lower power output, these other brands cannot maintain allow a faster flow rate.

Water Filter Capacity - Enagic's Filters can handle 3000 gallons before requiring a filter change. These filters can handle all types of water conditions. High grade filters are $120.00, regular filters are $90.00.

How long does it take to use up 3000 gallons? Considering that these machines produce water to be used for laundry, sanitizing counters, removing pesticides from fruits and vegetables, hair softeners and of course drinking for both humans and pets, the gallons per day will vary greatly. However, it is silly to think that any family, even a house of just one person, would use as little as 2.5 gallons per day.

A family of 3, including one pet, the occasional visiting friend and family member, plus the mooch who comes to get their daily water supply, using an average of 10 gallons per day, would use 3000 gallons in aprox. 10 months.

A family of 5 sharing water with 2 pets, 3 mooches and the occasional family or friend visiting, using an average of 20 gallons per day would need to change the filter every 5 months. Depending on the size of your family I would imagine most people will be changing their Enagic brand filters every 5 to 10 months.

Believe me, when you own one of Enagic's water ionizing machines, you will be sharing it with friends and family all the time. People will be sick with all types of illnesses and you will be hard pressed NOT to invite them over to get water from your machine.

Saline Solution or Electrolysis Enhancer Solution: 

The saline solution (Electrolysis Enhancer Solution) is kept in a separate tank. It is only used to create 2.5pH strong acidic and 11.5pH high alkaline - non drinking waters. The acidic water comes out of the drain tube only, never through the drinking water tube. Both of these waters are non toxic and are not for drinking.

The 8.5pH - 9.5pH drinking water and the 4.0pH - 6.0pH acidic or beauty waters are created without the use of the solution.

It is unwise to drink sea water as it can result in death. You can die from drinking too much water too fast.

The electrolysis enhancer solution used in Enagic's machines is not used in the drinking water, only the water used on the outside of the skin and is harmless if accidentally swallowed.
